Albuquerque is among the Land of Enchantmentís and Southwestís most sustainably progressive and economically viable cities. It has fared better during the recession because of its stable education, government and medical job bases.Growing programs at the University of New Mexico and the National Hispanic Cultural Center offer weekly visual and performing arts productions. There is a vibrant restaurant scene in eclectic Nob Hill as well as Old Town, the cityís historical link to its Spanish roots and at ABQ Uptown, the Duke Cityís hip lifestyle center. Several excellent golf courses and a network of hiking and mountain biking trails leading up the Western slopes of the Sandias keep weekend warriors satisfied. The cityís balloon festival in October attracts international visitors and its art galleries, theater productions and concerts keep residents socially and culturally active. The beloved Univ. of New Mexico Lobos are a national basketball power attracting sports fans throughout the Land of Enchantment. Coupled with cooler Southwest temperatures and lower real estate prices, Albuquerque has become a magnet for those who want a lifestyle change.

The pine and aspen covered Sandia Mountains rise to nearly 11,000 feet on the eastern edge of Albuquerque. Nestled at the foot of the rangeís eastern slopes are the East Mountain communities of Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Edgweood, and Sandia Park. Connecting the villages is the Land of Enchantmentís famed Turquoise Trail, a national scenic byway that leads to Santa Fe just an hour north. With the Sandiasí 400 square miles of varied terrain, residents have a chance to enjoy a varied outdoor lifestyle, yet Albuquerque with its jobs and cultural attractions is a traffic-free 20 minute drive. With over 100 miles of hiking, skiing and mountain biking trails weaving through four ecosystems, out- your- back- door adventures are nearly unlimited. Golfers are challenged by New Mexicoís nationally recognized 27-hole course, Paa-Ko Ridge. There are many styles of homes in the East Mountains from modern architectural glass and stone to more traditional adobe and ranch style wood frames. Many are surrounded by two acres making gardening, orchard keeping and horseback riding part of an East Mountain residentís daily routines.
